Issues | 1/2 Percent Safety Sales Tax
There’s going to be a 1/2 percent Safety Sales Tax issue on the ballot April 5, 2022, and our police and firemen need you to vote yes.
Public safety has always been the number one priority for our citizens. The demand for police officers and paramedics is off the charts with one adjacent city of similar size recently reporting a shortage of 40 officers and a larger adjacent city reporting a shortage of 100 officers.
We are continually contending with neighboring jurisdictions for the employment of police officers and firefighters. There is also a national trend that we are also experiencing where we are losing our Guardians of the City (police) and our Hometown Heroes (firemen) to the private sector.
Taking care of our own is what we do in Lee’s Summit. We must find ways to continue championing public safety which includes supporting our police, fire, and public works departments.
To sustain our high quality of life we must find ways to attract, retain, train, and equip our employees. Nearly every city around us has ½ percent public safety sales tax to support public safety. With the passage of the public safety sales tax we will sustain and improve our safety services including 911 dispatching, life saving equipment, and compensation needs for attraction and retention.
This issue will be on the ballot April 5, 2022, when you vote for Mayor.
